A cluster of three magnolia obovata growing from the same root system can be found in a cedar forest in the Hiranai area. Believing it to be the home of a mountain god, the Omae Family constructed a shrine next to it. Due to its location in the cedar forest, it was only known to locals until it was introduced as a "giant tree". The large leaves are fragrant and have bactericidal properties, which has led to their use as ingredients for cooking. Hoba sushi, hoba mochi, and grilled hoba are all made with "hoba", the leaves of the magnolia obovata.
