階上の天当平に珍しい松があります。アカマツの変種で、一本の根から地表近くで放射線状に枝が分かれた、笠や扇のような珍しい樹形をしています。姿が美しいことから国内では「うつくし松」とも呼ばれています。国指定の天然記念物になっている「うつくし松」もありますが、この「天当平のアカマツ」の方が姿形もよいという評判のアカマツです。
このアカマツは、天に向かって炎のように燃えあがる火に見えることから「火炎の松」と名付けられました。
また、途中から三又に分かれている三頭木であることから、「山ノ神」として祀られています。三頭木の樹は、昔からこの地方では、神様が宿る木として、木こりや猟師から敬われ伐採されることがなかったと云います。
This unique red pine plants its roots in the Tentotai area of Hashikami. At a relatively low height, the trunk splits into a fantastic fan shape reaching high into the air. Resembling a burning blaze reaching for the heavens, it bears the nickname “The Blazing Pine”.
Because this tree’s trunk splits into three as it fans out, it is also known as a “three-headed tree”, and it is believed that a mountain god resides in it. In this area, “three-headed trees” have long been recognized as the homes of gods, and it is said that lumberjacks and hunters would not cut them down.
