This Japanese beech grows next to Dainichido Temple, and is believed to be the home of a mountain god. Nourished by a small river that runs in front of the temple, it is said that this place has long been considered sacred, and cared for accordingly.

There are no beech forests in this area, and it is thought that any beeches on Mt. Hashikamidake were planted there, rather than growing naturally. With a trunk circumference of over four meters, this is clearly a tree whose presence is valued, hence why it has never been cut down.
