This Korean mountain ash is a "three-headed tree" -- its trunk splits into three large branches.  As such, it is believed to be the home of a mountain god. Korean Mountain ashes are deciduous trees found throughout Japan.

In terms of elevation, Korean mountain ashes grow in zones from 0m to around 1700m. Their shape -- a long trunk with the branches concentrated at the top -- means that they help create forest canopies. However, because they do not usually grow significantly tall, they are not often found in forests made up of cedars and other taller species.  In the case of this Korean mountain ash, due to its protected status as the the home of a mountain god, it has been able to grow tall. A shrine was built and dedicated to the god within.
