Japanese zelkova is the official tree of Hashikami Town. This zelkova is believed to be a manifestation of Sanno Gongen, an old mountain deity. Japanese zelkova seeds are spread through a couple of different methods. Somes seeds fall off the branches, landing near the tree's base. Other seeds happen to remain attached when branches are blown away in the wind. It is thought that these "hitchhiking" seeds are thus able to scatter farther from the parent tree.

The grain of Japanese zelkovas is quite regular, making them popular for decorative roadside landscaping and as sources of lumber. Their wood is also used in the production of furniture, musical instruments, and other implements, utensils, etc.
